IT IS rare to come across people who are not only well-versed with scriptural rules but also abide by them. One of them is Sri Purisai Nadadur Krishnamachariar, who completes 80 years on September 10. An Acharya of great repute, he is engaged in the mission of propagating Vishistadwaita philosophy. Majestic in personality but gentle in his demeanour, Sri Purisai Swami, as he is fondly called, is a true ``Vaishnava Simhan'' justifying the tile given to him, He was the recipient of President's award for Sanskrit. He has inherited an enviable spiritual tradition from his father who was a master of the Vedas and from his grandfather, who later became the 42nd head of the Ahobila Math, well known as ``Injumedu Azhagiyasingar."

As the family was steeped in religious activities, it is not surprising that Sri Krishnamachariar imbibed spiritual knowledge even while young. He was educated in the Patasalas at Madurantakam and Tirupati and had learnt tough works such as Sri Bashyam and Gita Bashyam besides Rahasya-thraya-sonam from eminent scholars of his days, and the heads of the Ahobila Math. The swami, now in Chennai, has trained a number of disciples and students not only in monu-mental scriptures but other texts of Vedanta Desika and others. Sri Purisai Swami has rendered the ``Sri Bashyam'' in Tamil (Sukha Bodini) to make the work accessible for the less-educated.

As an administrator, Sri Purisai Swami carried out several reforms in the practices in the Veeraraghavaswami temple in Tiruvallur, which is maintained by the Ahobila Math. The mini-tank inside the huge one belonging to the temple was constructed during his regime at the instance of the then Jeeyar Swami. Perhaps, the greatest achievement of Sri Purisai Swami was his task of editing the monthly Nrisimha Priya of the Ahobila Math for 50 years. Soft-spoken, but uncompromising in expounding the authoritative works in Ubhaya-Vedanta, Sri Purisai Swami is an ideal spiritual guide and a model for all others to follow in observing ``Achara'' and ``Anushtanam.''
